The Jersey branch of the MND Association was formed in the spring of 1991 during the illness of Miss Rosemary A'Court of Motorneurone Disease. Donations in her memory helped towards starting up the Jersey Branch which is formally registered with the Association of Jersey Charities.
Following Rosemary's death in August 1991 there were no declared cases of MND in the Island but the committee under it's Vice-Chairman, sought to take whatever steps were necessary and appropriate at this point in its development. These fell into two categories, fund-raising and the promotion of knowledge about MND.
As the estimated incidence of MND is about one in fifty thousand /population /per year it is likely that there are between two and five people with MND at any one time in Jersey. We support local nurses who are likely to come into contact with people with MND by financing their attendance at Study Courses on the Mainland.
Our role is not only to provide equipment and advice but also to provide qualified volunteer visitors who will call on a regular basis and give support both practical and emotional to people with MND and their families.
The majority of people with MND are cared for in their own homes and great importance is therefore placed on giving local support. We are there to do all we can to improve the quality of life of those affected and we provide vital equipment wherever it is needed. We are affiliated to the United Kingdom Charity but have entire control over any funds we raise. Each year funds permitting we donate a sum of money to a specific research project in the hope that one day not only a cause of the disease can be found but also a treatment and cure.
